Attendance Matters

School Attendance is one of the most important factors in determining a student’s success in school. Georgia Department of Education found that 9th graders who missed 15 days or more of school had a 30.73% graduation rate.  In comparison, 9th graders who missed 5 days of less had an 82.24% graduation rate.

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) defines chronic absenteeism as a student missing 10 percent or more of enrolled days excused or unexcused.

In the post-pandemic school year of 2020-2021, 21% of Gainesville City School students and 18.9% of Hall County School students were chronically absent.

Showing up matters for R.E.A.L.

Parents and caregivers can help their students by emphasizing that showing up matters for R.E.A.L. It is an opportunity to:

  • Build Routines
  • Increase Engagement
  • Provide Access to resources
  • Support Learning

Routines: Daily attendance routines, created at home or in school, can reduce stress for students and families and create a sense of safety and security, especially after chaotic transitions.

EngagementBeing in school helps students to get to know peers, teachers and school staff, and to create trusting relationships that motivate students to participate in learning.

Access to ResourcesSchools help students and families gain access to basic resources such as meals,  physical and mental health services, and fun enrichment activities including sports, clubs, music, afterschool and summer programs.

LearningLearning is most meaningful when it is active, social, and allows students to apply concepts to real life situations.  Showing up to school regularly helps students engage in learning that builds proficiency in reading and math that will help them to graduate from high school.
